2023 State Solo & Ensemble Championships

Hyde Street Youth Band had numerous entries to this year’s VBL State Solo & Ensemble Championships, with members competing in Under 10, Juvenile, Junior and Open Age categories.

The Hyde Street Quartet known as Eeee – that’s 2 Euphoniums and 2 Eb Tuba’s, are State Junior Champions, taking out 1st place, with an incredible mark of 96! Well done Fern, Imogen, James and Fergus!

Our Trio, known as ‘The Rat Pack’ of Polly, Stuart and Tom, are now the Junior State Champions with an incredible score of 92, magnificent!

We would like to congratulate Billy of Wodonga Brass, who is also a member of Hyde Street Youth Band who played with us for the Australian National Band Championships, for winning the Juvenile Cornet and Flugel horn sections, alongside taking out the Juvenile Brass Champion of Champions! Well done to Noah, also representing Creswick Brass Band, and Atticus on your beautiful performances in the Juvenile Cornet section!

Congratulations to James on an excellent score of 92 and placing 2nd in the Juvenile Trumpet section. It was a delight to listen, so well accompanied by your Dad, and Hyde Street’s wonderful accompanist, Patrick. Well done to Tom on your amazing 2nd place in the Junior trumpet, you played with such energy and gusto with such a rich sound!

Congratulations to James, Stuart and Victoria for your amazing performances placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the Junior Tenor Trombone section. And to Imogen for her 3rd in the Junior Bass Tuba, brilliant for one who’s been playing tuba for less than a year. Legends all of you! Congratulations to one of our talented percussionists, Will, who came 1st in the Junior Tuned Percussion with an exceptional score of 92!

Well done to Angus on 1st place in the Junior Tenor Horn and Junior Slow/Sacred Melody sections, alongside 2nd place in the Juvenile Tenor Horn section! We also congratulate Harrison on winning both the Junior Timpani and Side Drum sections, with an awesome score of 85 and 2nd in the Juvenile Novice Cornet/Trumpet! Well done to our brilliant Flugal player, Hetty and her super-talented father, Jamie (representing Glenferrie Brass) for taking out 2nd place with 96 in the highly competitive Open duet/trio – exceptional playing! Congratulations to our youngest and most energetic competitor, Charlie Traill! 2nd in the Under 10 Any Brass Instrument – we couldn’t be any prouder of the exceptional progress you’ve made in such a short time on your tenor horn – and the joy you bring to our Junior Band, players like you keep us all motivated to improve!
There were many volunteers that made today’s VBL State Solo and Ensemble Championships work; those who tirelessly organised the event and volunteered, some for 10-11 hours! One of our Hyde Street Youth Band heroes was our Vice President, Patrick, our esteemed accompanist, who not only spent weeks helping to prepare the kids for the solos today but played and supported the kids from 8.20 am to the final round of Champion of Champions after 6 pm. What a legend you are, and a testament to the community banding movement!
