Australian National Band Championships – Junior B and Open D Champions!
It wasn’t enough to be declared Australian National Junior C Grade Band Champions; Hyde Street Youth Band were also declared Open D Grade Champions against bands from NSW, Queensland and Victoria! What a brilliant bunch of kids, we are all so proud of your commitment, energy, and teamwork!
A major highlight was playing ‘Summit’ written for us by Andrew Batterham through funds provided by our local council – the City of Maribyrnong. Congratulations to our Junior B musical director Andrew Wilson on your first time conducting at the Nationals, and how privileged we are to have Phillipa Edwards as Musical Director for our Open D band – the energy you give to the band and the future of brass education in this country is second to none and we are all the better for it.
AFL Grand Final Parade 2022
The kids of Hyde Street Youth Band were so excited to be playing in the AFL Grand Final Parade for the first time in 3 years!
Many thanks to Jared McCunnie (composer) for putting together the scores at the last minute, the kids from the Footscay-Yarraville Percussion Academy and Victorian State Youth Brass Band and all the parents who helped on the day.
State Championships 2022
The Victoria State Band Championships were held on the 20th August in Ballarat. It was fantastic for the band to be back competing for the first time since 2019. Only the Youth Band entered this year and took home the Junior B Grade trophy and also came equal 4th in the Open D Grade.
Bendigo Eisteddfod
The Bendigo Eisteddfod was held on the 29th May 2022 and both the Youth Band and Junior Band competed. Both bands competed in the Junior section of the eisteddfod with the Youth Band pipping the Junior band for first and the Junior Band coming a close second. The Youth Band then went on the come second in the Open D Grade section which was a fantastic result given a competitive field.
ANZAC Parade 2022
HSYB commemorated all those who served Australia and New Zealand in military conflicts by supporting the Parade to the Shrine on the 25th April 2022. The band was led for the first time by our new Drum Major, Hetty Lawson.
Fern Gully Lodge Camp 2022
All band members and family were invited to attend the Fern Gully Lodge Camp in Healesville on the weekend of the 19th and 20th March. The band was also accompanied by members of the Victorian Percussion Academy with just over 50 band members and family attending. It was a fantastic weekend of both music and fun activities which culminated in a performance at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery.
Over the weekend the band also held the first of our Conductor Training classes under the direction of Jemima Bunn.
This event was only possible thanks to funding provided by the City of Maribyrnong Triennial Arts Grant for which the band is extremely appreciative.
Moomba Parade 2022
For the first time in quite a while, a combined HSYB/HSJN band took to the streets of Melbourne and marched in the 2022 Moomba Parade. The kids had a great time and were led by Andrew Wilson, MD for the Junior Band.
HMAS Yarra Memorial 2022
2022 was the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the Yarra with the loss of all bar 13 of those aboard. The event was well attended by families of Yarra sailors as well as representative from the RAN, local dignitaries and other from the local community including the Williamstown Sea Cadets.
HSYB has proudly provided the musical support for this event for many many years and was once again very pleased to be asked to help honor those who bravely died aboard the Yarra.
AFL Grand Final Parade 2019
After 2 years of playing for local teams, 2019 saw the band support the Greater Western Sydney Giants with a rousing rendition of their club song. The tune itself is really very good with hints of Russian music. The GWS fans few hugely out numbered by Richmond supported but the band was still well received and sounded great.
Carols in Yarraville Gardens 2018
The 2018 Yarrville Carols was the last event for Jee Kromhof to lead the band, at least for the time being. Whilst Jee has been dragged away to work with the CFA at Portland, it is hoped he will rejoin the band in the next tweleve months or so. The 2018 Carols were also made extra special thanks to a $2,500 grant being presented to Hyde Street at this gig. Thanks Seddon Community Bank Branch for your ongoing support.
AFL Grand Final Parade 2018
For the second year in a row, Hyde Street was invited to preform in the 2018 AFL Grand Final Parade. Due to the minimum age requirement of the AFL, only those members over 15 were able to march so it was necessary to get a few friends to help from Camberwell High, Western Brass, FYCB, Darebin and even as far a field as Dandenong. We managed once again to avoid playing for an interstate club and instead performed Good Ole Collingwood Forever. Whilst we had a few showers to start with, the weather cleared up for the march and didn’t come down again until just after we finished. A few of the kids then hung around for a bit of profitable busking at “The G”
ANZAC Day 2018
ANZAC Day 2018 was one of the best days for marching we have seen in recent years. The clouds cleared and we had a fin e, cool dry day, not to hot and sunny and not raining. As was the case in 2017, a number of members of the Junior Band stepped up to step off with the Youth Band. It was great to see Nicky, Otto and Nash playing with the Youth Band and is a sign of things to come in the future. The band even had a long performance time down at the shrine so took the opportunity to play The Victorian Rifles which sounded even better than at the Nationals (or maybe it was just the fitting surroundings?)
National Band Championships Melbourne 2018
The Nationals are over for another years and once again Hyde Street have had a very successful campaign. Our Youth Band backed up last years Junior C Grade win by bring home the trophy in the Junior B Grade, our Junior Band overcame their initial trepidation and nerves to come 3rd in the Junior C Grade in their first ever competition and the Youth Band performed extremely well in a tough field to beat two adult band and ended up 7th in the Open D Grade. Considering the top three bands in this section and almost certainly C Grade bands (the winners have already been promoted to C Grade) this is also an outstanding result.
Whilst the results at the competition were fantastic, the reward for me as President was seeing the big smiles on the faces of the band members from both bands and getting feedback from so many parents how their kids love to come to band and really enjoy participating. With many kids in both the Junior and Youth Bands who haven’t been to a Nationals before, it was extremely pleasing to hear how much fun everyone had.
Carols in Yarraville Gardens 2017
In what has become a Christmas Tradition, Hyde Street Youth Band joined forces with Western Brass and the Footscray Yarraville City band to provide the accompanying music for the 2017 Carol in Yarraville Gardens on the 16th December 2017. This year as an added extra, the Hyde Street Junior Band performed in front of their largest crowd yet, playing to about 6,000 during the Community Hour.
End of Year Concert 2017
The Hyde Street End of Year Concert was held on the 3rd December 2017 in the Blue Stone Church Performance Space. In attendance was the Mayor of Maribyrnong Cr Cuc Lam as well as Andy Moutray-Read from the Seddon Community Bank Branch who has of course been one of the bands long time supporters. The concert started with the recently renamed Hyde Street Junior Band who are sounding great for such an inexperienced band (one could be fooled for thinking they’d all be playing for years!). A number of members of the band performed solo or in smaller ensembles. This demonstrated the confidence that being a member of the band helps build in young kids.
The Junior Band was followed by the Youth Band who rocked the house, especially when Liam Conrad played a drum kit solo as a “retirement special” in what will be his last year in the band.
This year the band farewells Ben Greilach, Liam Conrad, Patrick Watkins who have all aged out. We also bid farewell to Josh and Harvey De Koster as they move to Western Brass and Ned Warburton as he hangs up his Baritone and retires from music.
AFL Grand Final Parade 2017
After a year of discussions with the AFL and their event organisers, Hyde Street was proud to perform at the 2017 Grand Final Parade, supporting the Richmond Football Club who would go on to win the Grand Final the following day. This was almost without doubt the biggest audience Hyde Street has ever performed in front of with between 140,000 and 150,000 at the parade and a television audience of several million more. The kid were well supported with some other performers from both the Footscray Yarraville City Band and even a ring in or two from Dandenong, busting to support their favoured club Richmond.
The band was led by the one and only Joseph Vincent, the current Junior National Drum Major champion.
Hyde Street Junior (nee Training) Band – Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod 2017
In September 2017 the Hyde Street Training Band took their next step by performing at their first Eisteddfod. Almost the entire Training Band supported by a few extras from the Youth Band made an early morning trip to Traralgon to perform as a junior ungraded band. This was a valuable experience for the band and is the next step in them becoming a graded band who in future will be able to compete in competitions include the State Band Chamionships which they are targeting for 2018.
Maribyrnong Proms Concert 2017
This years concert was held at the Quinn Auditorium at Caroline Chisholm College in Braybrook, and what a fantastic venue this is. The audience of approx 300 plus was entertained by 4 bands including the Hyde Street Training Band in their first major public performance. Hyde Street, Western Brass and Footscray Yarraville played a selection of modern and classic pieces with the xylophone and trombone solos being absolute highlights. As in 2016, the performance conlcluded with all bands joining together for a finale followed by a gourmet afternoon tea prepared by our long time friend and executive chef, Keith Jackson.
Holy Trinity Williamstown 2017
The Hyde Street Youth Band was invited to play in a joint fund raising concert at Holy Trinity Williamstown by parishioners who came to the 2016 Proms Concert. Whilst this wasn’t a huge event for the band, it was wonderful to play in this church which was built in 1821 to an audience of appreciative Williamstown locals.
ANZAC Day 2017
The rain threatened and for a while fell but by the time Hyde Street were ready to step off, the weather improved and the biggest band in recent years, swelled by several members of the training band, stepped off with nearly forty members. The weather did the keep the crowds down this year but that didn’t reduce the enthusiasm shown by the band for this most important of days.
National Band Championships Launceston 2017
The 2017 National Band Championships proved to be the most successful in recent years for the Hyde Street Youth Band, Not only did the band members and their families have a great weekend in Launceston but the band walked away as Junior C Grade Champions as well as the best Open D Grade Marching Band. On top of this, in his first Nationals as drum major, Joseph Vincent was awarded best Junior Drum Major. No one could have been more pleased and excited than our Musical Director having won in his first competition as a Junior Musical Director in Australia.
Other performances
The members of the Hyde Street Youth Band love to perform and whilst not all band members can perform at every event, most love the opportunity to be center stage. As well as participating in both paid and unpaid community performances, HYSB also performs in joint concerts with the A Grade Footscray Yarraville Band and at our annual end of year concert.
